The successful installation of the ‘TIGER’ at the Trinity College has been completed and with it this cutting edge SEM brings a new technology approach into still growing geosciences and TESCAN is proud of being part of this advance. The Facility will be used to develop new approaches to resource use and environmental mitigation.

With a well-attended opening event, in December 2016, Geochemists from iCRAG, the Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences, and Trinity College Dublin launched a new micro-beam analytical laboratory. The new facility, named “The iCRAG Lab@TCD”, comprises state of the art electron and laser beam equipment for the characterisation of geoscience material.

The event marked a new era in geo-analysis in Ireland with the launch of the first dedicated Geological, X-Ray Analysis and Raman equipped Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope, the ‘TIGER’ (TESCAN Integrated Geo Elemental Raman), which is funded by Science Foundation Ireland. The TIGER system uses the latest in multi detector technology for the characterisation of minerals and is a Pan-European collaboration of Trinity College and three leading manufacturers, TESCAN, Oxford Instruments and WITec giving Irish researchers a cutting edge in applied and fundamental research.

Speaking at the launch, iCRAG Deputy Director Prof. Balz Kamber said, “The TIGER is a special type of scanning electron microscope, which we will use to investigate real-world rocks and environmental samples at sub-microscopic scale. Most importantly, the TIGER can quantify the content of valuable metals in rocks in unprecedented detail. It will thus be used to develop new approaches to resource and energy efficiency.”
