In 2020, The Company of Biologists and Journal of Cell Science launched FocalPlane, a community website to connect people, products, resources and information from all fields of microscopy. FocalPlane is a place to read, write and interact with the global microscopy community, where, once registered, you can freely share blog posts, job adverts and event listings. We analyse the progress of the site so far, considering demographics of our community, most popular posts and most useful pages, to help us understand how FocalPlane can best serve the community and in turn, to guide the project as it moves forward. We also look at the newly launched FocalPlane Network, which exists to help those looking for reviewers, speakers, committee members and so on, to identify individuals that might not otherwise come to mind. Anyone within the community, at any career stage, can join the Network and we hope it will help promote diversity in our field. FocalPlane is a resource for the global microscopy community, and we seek ideas, input or feedback from you to help us drive the future of the site.
