Understanding how materials respond to changing conditions such as temperature, pressure, tensile force and humidity is vital to define the applications they can be used for. Linkam Scientific has been developing and manufacturing thermal stages for over 30 years. These are used in many industries’ and universities around the world to aid in the characterisation of materials from polymers to biological tissue, from metals to composites, from APIs to excipients, from -196 °C to +1500 °C.

Adding a Linkam stage to your microscope can really help expand your understanding of the sample and its characteristics.

Optical differential scanning calorimetry to measure transition temperatures

The Optical DSC450 combines image capture with DSC to provide a solution that correlates enthalpy changes of samples with visual changes to the sample. The Optical DSC450 has a temperature range from -196°C to 450°C.

The new DSC has been specifically designed to work with optical microscopes. The new LINK Digital Imaging modules enables additional information to be obtained by correlating optical changes such as colour and morphology with temperature. The Thermal Analysis by Surface Characterisation (TASC) module from Linkam further enhances the capabilities of the new DSC450. TASC is a new image analysis algorithm which enables structural changes in samples to be tracked and quantified. It has the unique ability to measure local transition temperatures allowing different points on a sample can be analysed thereby providing information on sample homogeneity. TASC can also be used for dissolution studies.

RH95 Relative Humidity System

The control of water vapour in the environment around a sample is vital. The smallest change in RH% can have huge implications on the characteristics of a sample and how it behaves including chemical changes of some APIs and mechanical stability of tablets. The RH95 is designed to provide environmental sample control to the Linkam range of temperature controlled stages. It provides precise control in a compact, self-contained package with no requirement for an external dry air supply.

It can be used to control the RH% between 5%-90% (when temperature is between ambient and 85 °C). The RH95 can be used in combination with light microscopy, Raman, FT-IR and X-ray to further characterise samples.


We will also be showing our CMS196M, the solution for Cryo-CLEM. Cryo-CLEM brings it all together: combining the individual advantages from both fluorescence and EM by imaging the same sample location with both techniques and superimposing the complementing information.

On Wednesday 5th July there is a session focussed on correlative techniques and Linkam will be running a short workshop during the lunch break to show our CMS196M as well as a first introduction to the next-generation of plunge freezers. mmc2017 is the latest in an impressive list of events dating back to the 1960s starting with the Micro conference and exhibition series. This later became MicroScience which grew ever-bigger until 2010. The RMS hosted the European Microscopy Congress in 2012 which was the catalyst for the current Microscience Microscopy Congress series.
